Maria de la Paz is a scientist in the Division of Water Quality, Groundwater Protection Section, assisting the Groundwater Ambient Monitoring Assessment Program. She performs professional science-based environmental and data analysis related to groundwater quality, and coordinates with local environmental health agencies to implement the Voluntary Domestic Well Assessment Project.
In addition to working for the government, Dr. Carpio-Obeso has also worked in academia and the private sector. She was a Professor at the Engineering Institute, Agriculture, and Veterinary Faculties of the University Autonomous of Baja California, Mexico (UABC), where she conducted research on energy and the environment. At Qumica Organica de Mexico, she developed analytical methodologies for pesticides. Overall, her work experience includes environmental monitoring, geo-environmental technology, environmental chemistry, water quality, and modeling. She is one of the pioneers in the development and implementation of Bi-National Environmental Studies on the border between Mexico and the United States.
Maria de la Paz received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from UABC, Mexico, completed graduate studies in Food Microbiology and Toxicology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and earned her Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry from the University of California, Davis.
Maria de la Paz enjoys quality time with her family and friends. She travels to Mexico once a month to stay in touch with colleagues and the culture. She likes music and singing, and she is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), California Hispanic Association of Professionals in Agriculture (CHAPA) and Davis Korean Church.
