Class 38

Tyler Dawley
Manager
Big Bluff Ranch

Big Bluff Ranch grows and markets sustainably-raised grassfed beef and lamb. Since 1980, the ranch has been managed with the health of the land at the forefront. This emphasis on a healthy rangeland led to the breeding of their cow herd to fit the environment. Tyler has taken the reins from his father and is now the one responsible for maintaining cattle genetics. Tyler has also introduced a flock of Katahdin hair sheep to the ranch for both range management considerations as well as the superior flavor of their meat. On most ranches, the work is done when the animals are sold at the auction yard. At Big Bluff Ranch, everything is directly marketed. Tyler is responsible for that marketing by overseeing three to five farmers markets a week, direct sales to consumers and various wholesales accounts.

Tyler is active in both his professional and personal communities. On a professional level, Tyler is Vice President of the Northern California Lamb Producers, LLC which is creating a regionally branded lamb product that will allow consumers to know where their high quality lamb is coming from, as well as providing a fair income to the producer. In his spare time, Tyler enjoys his role as Vice President of the Shasta Cascade Slow Food Convivium. Along with his other "slow foodie" colleagues, he is creating a food community that celebrates the local foods.

Tyler graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a Bachelor of Arts in Literature. Tyler lives on the ranch where he was raised near Red Bluff.
