SALINAS, October 25, 2016 – Deanna van Klaveren was honored with the 2016 Profiles in Leadership Award by the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation (CALF) and the Ag Leadership Alumni Council. The award was presented at a recent ceremony at the Clovis Veterans Memorial District.
The Profiles in Leadership Award recognizes alumni of the California Agricultural Leadership Program for their leadership actions resulting in the betterment of industry, community, business, government, education and/or the environment.
Van Klaveren, of Modesto, is the co-owner of Generation Growers, Inc. and a Class 32 graduate of the Ag Leadership Program. She has been deeply involved with the foundation, program and Alumni Council since 2005. She has also served in leadership positions for agricultural organizations and school and youth groups.
“Deanna is the ultimate example of a servant leader,” said CALF President Barry Bedwell. “She is an exceptional team player and an actively engaged volunteer. She has worked tirelessly for the benefit of Ag Leadership and she has made many positive contributions to ag industry and local endeavors. We are proud to honor her with this award.”
CALF operates the Ag Leadership Program, which is considered to be one of the premier leadership development experiences in the United States. Since it was first delivered in 1970, more than 1,300 men and women have participated in the program and have become influential leaders and active volunteers in agriculture, government, communities, business and education.
Deanna and her husband, Roger, are co-owners of Generation Growers, Inc., in Modesto. The company is in its 60th year of growing plants in containers for retail garden centers in Northern California. Deanna manages sales, marketing, inventory and financial responsibilities for the company. Before joining Generation Growers in 1997, she was a teacher, FFA advisor and coach at Merrill F. West High School in Tracy.
Since graduating from the California Agricultural Leadership Program, Deanna has been actively involved with the program and the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation. For the Ag Leadership Alumni Council, she served as a regional and at-large director, chair (2009-2010) and board liaison (2009-2014). She is currently a member of the Alumni Council’s strategic alignment committee and is the communications support person. Deanna has also participated on a candidate screening committee, in exit interviews, and on the planning committee for the Agricultural and Government Leaders Reception.
Outside of Ag Leadership, Deanna is very active in her community. She is heavily involved in Hart-Ransom Elementary School and is the vice president of the Central Valley Roadrunners Youth Track Club. In the agriculture industry, she has served as a board member for the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers, agriculture advisory member for the California State Fair, horticulture advisory member for California Community Colleges, and an advisory member for the Cal Poly Agricultural Education and Communication Department. Deanna graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a bachelor’s degree in ornamental horticulture and a secondary teaching credential in agriculture.
